Pastoral Theology - Field Education 5481
Pastoral Health Care

September 2009 to April 2010
THURSDAYS 12:30 - 4:00 PM

Sessions will be held at:
Regional Mental Health Care London
850 Highbury Avenue, London

(Please check the Course Outline for details of specific locations, times, and agenda.)

A. COURSE DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of trained supervisors, the student enters into hospital ministry. The program includes visitation of patients and de-briefing groups for the integration of their theology and experiences with the infirmed.

B. GOALS

Through experiential learning in Spiritual Care, and as a team member within a hospital setting, each student is accountable to develop and strive to attain personal, professional, theological, and group goals.

C. COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

Field Education 5481 is an experiential learning course. It uses an action-reflection model of learning. Unlike most academic courses it emphasizes a self-awareness process and practice in ministry. This learning process combines didactics, the students' experience and opportunities to reflect, peer consultation, participation, and written work.

Daily Outline
Regional Mental Health Care London

12:30 pm Group Check In
12:45 pm Didactic Group Seminars
1:45 pm Pastoral Visiting
3:30-4:00 pm Group Debriefing

PROFESSIONAL ATTIRE/DRESS CODE:

Casual, professional attire, i.e. no clerical garb. Religious symbols are not to be a visible part of how you dress. This lack of symbols promotes multi-faith sensitivity and also safety for both you and those you visit.

VISITATION RECORD:

You are responsible to provide a report of visits at the end of each afternoon to your course leader. Any situations of concern should be reported to the course leader before you return to the Seminary.

COURSE LEARNING CONTRACT:

* Learning goals: You will reflect on learning goals and how you will monitor progress. (See Assignment #1 at the beginning and Assignment #6 at mid term). You will also participate in your own evaluation. (See Assignments #5 and #7).
* We are mutually accountable for all aspects of the course, with its processes as outlined. All written assignments are to be typed.
* Within the context of this learning experience there will be events that surprise or challenge you. Because these provide learning opportunity, you might choose or be asked to write an additional one-page reflection report about your experience.

EVALUATIONS:

You will have an opportunity to evaluate your progress on the Field Education course at the end of each semester. You will also receive an individual evaluation at the end of each semester, which will be based on your progress in relation to the goals that you set at the beginning of the course, your written material, your performance in visiting patients and group participation. Assignment #1

Write a three-page paper about your story and learning intentions.

In one page give a summary of your personal story and learning intentions.  Include family background and social and vocational development.

In a second page discuss how you have been doing theological reflection during your past pastoral placement year.  How might this inform your learning goals for the semester?

Pursuing learning goals is key to your success in field education.  The third page of this assignment is to identify a goal for each of three learning areas: pastoral (and interpersonal), pastoral (presence and identity in ministry), and professional (skills and abilities).  Propose how you will pursue and monitor success in each of these three goals.  Include the "Student Learning Contract" that you are providing to the Field Education Director.
Due Date:  September 17

Assignment #2

Verbatim Report: See Outline

Due Dates:

October 15 and November 5, 2009
January 28 and March 4, 2010

Assignment #3
(Four reports, two each term)

Theological Reflection:  These are based on each of four discussions at the seminary about theological reflection on field education ministry experience.  Each report is a one-page reflection including a) how the experience impacts your view of self and ministry; b) where you see God in the experience; and c) a scripture text that informs and focuses your understanding.
Due: Oct. 22, Nov. 26, Feb. 4, Mar. 25.  (Thursday after each Monday session at Seminary.)

Due Date: November 26

Self-Evaluation Discussion with Peers, December 3: Your development as a member of a ministry team is an important part of experiential learning.  In this discussion with peers, each person reflects on personal involvement and experience in the peer group.  Discuss your learning and development as a participant in this ministry team and how you have used the peer group process to support your learning from experience.  How has this been important to you?

Identify your learning goals, summarize your progress in attaining them, and invite your colleagues to offer feedback regarding your progress.

Assignment #6

End of Course Self Evaluation

You will write a four or five page self-evaluation of your Field Education experience.  Here you will discuss your learning process and in what ways your understanding of ministry has evolved and how you have integrated theology with practice of ministry.  Along with giving a copy to your supervisor, you may use this in your self evaluation discussion with peers (see discussion below).  Use the following questions as headings for the sections of your self-evaluation.  Introduce your paper by identifying learning goals and then make some reference to these in the various sections.

1.Reflect on your practice of spiritual care.  How has this changed or developed during this course.  Illustrate this with anonymous examples and situations of ministry at the hospital.

2. Discuss your understanding of ministry, particularly some ways in which your ideas and perspectives have grown and developed through the course.

3. How you have made use of supervision.  Reflect on your relationships with your supervisor.

4. How have you learned from peer supervision?  Reflect on your relationship with each peer and how that relationship has been part of your learning.  Reflect/comment on your growth as a member of this ministering team.

How you have used the peer group to support your learning from your experience in ministry.

What have you learned from each peer relationship?

How have you contributed to your peers' learning?

What have you learned about effective group processes?

Where might you want to grow further in using a peer group?

5. Identify how you have benefitted from the course and how this learning will inform your future ministry.  Also comment on areas where you see that you need further growth.

6. Overall response to the course, including any feedback about your experience of the course.
Due Date: March 25, 2010

Self-Evaluation Discussion with Peers, April 8 (Same as in first term)

In this discussion with peers, each person reflects on personal involvement and experience in the peer group.  Discuss your learning and development as a participant in this ministry team and how you have used the peer group process to support your learning from experience.  How has this been important to you?

Identify your learning goals for this course, summarize your progress in attaining them, and invite your colleagues to offer feedback regarding your progress.

Reflect/comment on your growth as a member of this monitoring team, using section 4 of your self-evaluation paper to support your discussion.

Also comment on areas where you see that you need further growth.

 VERBATIM OUTLINE

This outline is to be used in all verbatim reports.  Leave a 2½ inch margin down the left side of the page; include your name, date and the length of the visit and its location.  To preserve the confidentiality of the patient and family, never use their real names or give information that would reveal the identity of the patient and/or family.

Include the following under separate hearings:

Background Information
Provide any information that you had going into the visit, including how a previous visit informed you.  Briefly describe the setting, the patient and anything that will help us perceive and understand the circumstances and background of the visit.  Try to use your various senses.

Pastoral Intent
What are your intentions as you enter this visit, both what you wanted to do in caring for this person and what you want to learn by writing this report?

Encounter
In Verbatim format, write out the visit in detail, quoting directly from your interactions.  In script form, identify who is speaking by letters representing roles, e.g. C-chaplain, P-patient, N-nurse.  Number successive speeches: e.g. C1, P1, C2, P2, etc.  Do not use paragraphs to describe topics discussed during your encounter (for example, he/she talked at length about career/church/family/wedding/farming).  You may describe gaps in the verbatim script and any interruptions to the visit.

Your feelings:
What feelings (e.g. reactions, concerns, tensions, attractions, and sympathies) did you have, and how did your feelings influence your visit?

Spiritual and Theological Assessment

How do you understand this person's spiritual vitality, capacity, or practice?

With references to this visit and to this persons's story and personal experience, comment on your understanding of this person regarding at least three of the following theological themes: 1) sense of the holy; 2) personal faith and trust vs. fear; 3) hope vs. despair; 4) grace and gratitude vs. excessive self-accomplishment; 5) relation to community; 6) sense of vocation.  You might help your focus and understanding by using a biblical text.

What interventions did you use to support the person and the visit process?

Self Reflection

What pastoral image were you incarnating and why?

Reflection on this visit: a.) What pastoral opportunities were present? b) What theological issues were raised? c) How did you respond to these?

How did you miss the opportunity to be pastoral?

What would you change? Why?

How did this visit help you meet your learning goals?
