Liturgical Musicians' Workshop: General Instruction on the Roman Missal (GIRM)
Workshop Summary
MUSIC NOTES:
During this past January and February 2011, over 600 parish musicians gathered to learn about the the third edition of the Roman Missal and how its implementation will affect their ministry in leading congregational song. Workshops were held in London (St. George Parish), Dublin (St Patrick Parish), Tecumseh (St. Anne Parish), Sarnia (Sacred Heart Parish), and Tillsonburg (St. Mary Parish).
Along with some background on the changes to the liturgical texts, groups learned a new setting of the Gloria, Holy, Memorial Acclamation, and Great Amen. These settings will be used throughout the diocese for the first year of the implementation period.
The Gloria is from the Mass of Peace and Joy by Tony Alonzo (GIA Publication). It is written with a refrain for the assembly, although it is imagined that after a period of time the whole community will probably join in singing the verses.
The Eucharistic Acclamations: Holy, Memorial Acclamation and Great Amen are found in the Canadian publication Celebrate in Song , soon to be available. This booklet is produced as a supplement to the parish hymnal. It contains three Mass settings by Canadian composers, a chant setting and forty hymns. We have selected the Mass setting by Fr. Geoffrey Angeles. The supplement also contains all the responses that the assembly will need to participate in the liturgy.
Cathryn Hall (St. Peter's Cathedral), Chairperson of our Diocesan Music Committee, presented two short segments on the role of music in the liturgy and the role of musicians in assisting change in their parish. We saw great enthusiasm and dedication among the parish musicians. Many were excited about learning music together, being supported by the sound of one another's voice, and urged on by the confidence of their neighbour.
