Copyright and YouTube

YouTube videos can be used in the classroom if the copyright owner (ie. the creator of the content) uploaded the video onto YouTube. It is your responsibility to verify the legitimacy of the creator for holding the content copyright. For instance many content creators like the CBC, (The Rick Mercer Report) and the Discovery Networks have uploaded their material to YouTube and the videos from these links can be viewed in class. Please consult YouTube’s Copyright Tips page: http://www.youtube.com/t/howto_copyright  for more information about the copyright law and YouTube Videos.

Please note that use of television programs such as sitcoms, sport broadcasts and comedy shows on YouTube will most likely be an infringement of copyright. It is important to verify that the content was uploaded by the creator who owns the copyright. The username who uploaded the content will be a big clue as to whether they own the content. For instance, if you wish to show a Rick Mercer’s clip, “Politics is no place for Grownups” in  the classroom  it will be necessary to go to the official Rick Mercer site on YouTube and show the clip from the CBC site. http://www.cbc.ca/video/#/Shows/The_Rick_Mercer_Report
